Winter opening times

Now that Christmas and New Year have passed the museum is open every day between 11 am and 3 pm until the end of February.

Welcome to the museum

There are over 1000 pieces on show on two floors, including many unique and never before seen pieces from glass maker's archives. On the ground floor we showcase the Island's many glass studios, including Isle of Wight Studio Glass, Diamond Isle Sculptured Glass, Glory Art Glass and Alum Bay Glass as well as related studios such as Jonathan Harris Studio Glass. We also have a stunning collection of Mdina glass from the period between 1968 and 1972, many pieces signed by Michael Harris. There are designs by Michael from the 1950s and when he was at the Royal College of Art in London in the 1960s too. We also have a fascinating and growing collection of French, German and British Art Deco as well as Victorian glass on the first floor.

We hope the museum will be more than a place to see glass. To that end we have set up a coffee lounge, with comfy sofas and stylish tables plus a drinks machine so that visitors can help themselves to a cuppa, relax and have a natter. Wifi will be available too to surf the internet. Next to the coffee machine we have a bookcase, which will be stocked with various books on art glass in general, not just island glass, and books about the Isle of Wight. - Click here to read more - Comments: 0

Glass is going into the cabinets - 15 Jan 2016 00:32

Tags: cabinets exhibits installation

After a lot of preparatory work, glass is at last going into the cabinets. Before they do, though, every piece has to be catalogued, with a description of the item, who designed it, and where and when it was made. A picture is taken too. Then its exact location in the museum is recorded. Every cabinet has a code so we know where everything is at any time. In three days about 150 pieces were put in place. Next week another 150 pieces will be added. We thought it would be nice to share some pictures. - Click here to read more - Comments: 0
