When the museum opened in March 2016 we had a shop from day one. However, when the space we occupied on the ground floor of Eastern Barn, Arreton, became insufficient, in Spring 2018 we moved to the first floor. At that point the shop closed. This is the story of how we opened a new and better shop in August 2019, with lots of pictures to illustrate what we did.

First of all we cleared a portion of our store room to create the space for the shop.

The museum recruited two retail staff in August. Therefore, while the new shop was being constructed we set up a temporary shop, using a table and a sales counter we had kept in storage.

The first job was to build a stud wall to divide off the shop space. A new door was inserted in the wall to provide access to the store room. That took just two days. The area for the shop measures 4.4 meters by 3.8 meters.

The next job was to paint the walls and ceiling. The pictures have just one coat. It needed a couple of coats to get a good finish.

Once that was done we installed a cabinet to put the till on top. It also provided some storage space.

An electrician then installed LED panel lights on the ceiling, power sockets in the new stud wall, and a power socket behind the till. That may seem a bit back to front, putting a cabinet in first, but busy electricians are hard to book exactly when you want them! But it worked out well. After touching up the ceiling paint and painting the floor we were ready to install the other furniture.

Shelves were added to both walls, opposite each other. They use the TwinSlot system; the shelves are height adjustable.

More shelving and a card rack were added.

Finally, we built a gondola shelving unit and wheeled in the sales counter from our old shop.

I am sure you agree that we achieved quite a transformation and created a lovely shop.
